Sacred Sites Series: Glastonbury Tor

Imagine you are wandering through a dense, lush, green landscape. You see large gnarled oaks and thorny hawthorn trees that seem to have a magical presence. You walk toward a marsh, surrounded by the sounds of birds chirping and frogs calling to each other.

The air becomes misty and silver. What's that you see in the distance? The outline of a small woman in robes… could it be a fairy… perhaps the Lady of the Lake?

As a fan of The Mists of Avalon books, I could not resist setting the scene for this sacred site: Glastonbury Tor. Some say it was the land of the fairies, Avalon, that was heavily featured in Arthurian legends.

Today we will be learning about the geography of the Tor, diving deep into the magical myths surrounding it including Jesus Christ’s potential affiliation with the site, and finally I will reveal the vibrational frequency of Glastonbury Tor as it is now and what it was in 300BC. 

A Mysterious Formation In The English Countryside

In Somerset county in England, the 500-foot tall hill in the heart of Glastonbury is carved with an ancient three-dimensional labyrinth. The winding formation around the hill spirals around seven times and ends at the summit where the 14th century St Michael’s tower still stands.

Tor is a Celtic word meaning “hill.” In ancient times, the green plains surrounding the Tor were covered in shallow marshy water, and the tall hill was an island. The surrounding land is flat land and those who climb to the top of the Tor are rewarded with a sweeping 360-degree view.

The Tor was home to a village, several churches, and an Abbey over the years. Tools were discovered there from as far back as the Neolithic Era. This area was also home to the famous Glastonbury Thorn tree and the Chalice Well which we will discuss for the incredible legends they are associated with next.

One other geographical aspect I want to mention is the metaphysical magnetic force underneath the Tor. There is an energy grid under the Earth’s surface and the lines that connect it are called ley lines. Glastonbury Tor is believed to be one of the powerful places on Earth where ley lines cross. Machu Pichu and Stonehenge are other example locations of ley line crossings.

Famous Myths And Legends 

Avalon: A Hidden Realm of Fairies and Arthurian Legend

Magic Mountain, Faeries’ Glass Hill, and Grail Castle are some of the alternate names for Glastonbury Tor. Now you will find out why!

Some say the Tor is actually hollow and is a portal to a fairy kingdom. There are local myths about the lord of the Celtic underworld, Gwyn ab Nudd, and the “Cauldron of Rebirth.”

In Arthurian legend and the famous fantasy series The Mists of Avalon, the Tor was referenced as a sacred land of Druids and fairies. Glastonbury has a long tradition of being ‘The Isle of Avalon’ where King Arthur went after his last battle. Monks claimed to have discovered his grave in the 12th century. Glastonbury Tor is a sacred site in the Celtic tradition and new age druidic communities to this day.

As I mentioned, there used to be a body of water surrounding the Tor, which is why it is called the Isle of Avalon or the Isle of Glass in legend. It was named the Isle of Glass because of how it reflected in the water. Two 2,000 year old oak trees that still stand near the Tor, known fondly as Gog and Magog, are thought to be the ancient entrance to Avalon.

In the stories of King Arthur, the Holy Grail was the object of an epic quest, and you are about to discover how that connects to Jesus Christ’s potential connection to The Tor.

Jesus Christ’s Affiliation with the Tor

"And did those feet in ancient time
Walk upon England’s mountains green?
And was the Holy Lamb of God"

This is an excerpt about Glastonbury Tor from William Blake’s famous poem ‘Jerusalem.’ He is referencing the legend that Jesus accompanied his merchant uncle, Joseph of Arimathea, on a trip to Glastonbury when Jesus was a young boy.

It is said that Joseph returned to Glastonbury with the Holy Grail. He came to have it when he brought it home after The Last Supper, and later Jesus brought it to him in a vision when Joseph was imprisoned. After Joseph was freed and traveled to Glastonbury, he hid the Grail inside the mouth of what is now called The Chalice Well.

Immediately the water began to run blood red and is so named the Red Spring. Some say this is to represent the blood of Christ and that the water has healing powers. You can visit the well to this day and see the iron-rich red water for yourself. Interestingly, there is a spring right next to the Red Spring called the White Spring. It’s calcium-rich flow colors the water white. It is a wondrous phenomenon to have two such different springs so close.

Glastonbury Thorn

Another Glastonbury Tor landmark surrounded by Biblical lore is the Glastonbury Thorn. There was a hawthorn tree on the top of the hill that was said to have sprouted from a walking staff that Joseph planted into the ground during his time in Glastonbury when he established the first church in Britain. It miraculously flowered twice a year - once in spring and once at Christmastime.

A tradition began in the 1600s for local school children to sing carols around the tree and send a cutting to Buckingham Palace for the queen's Christmas table.

Sadly, in the 17th century, during the English Civil War, the Puritans chopped down the original Glastonbury Thorn as an object of superstition. Plenty of trees grafted from the original tree can still be seen around the town – including one at the Abbey and one at the Church of St. John.

Although the original Glastonbury Thorn is gone, the tradition of sending a cutting to the queen still remains! There is a heart warming article about which child is chosen to cut the sprig in the local paper every year.

The Vibrational Frequency of Glastonbury Tor

When Alejandro and I assess the vibrational frequency of a location, we interpret the energetic readings on a scale. In reading these historic and sacred sites, we simply tell the tale and unveil what is already present. These readings help tell the story of what the location was like at a given period of time in history.

First, we measured the overall frequency in the past, during 300BC when the village there was first built. Back then, the vibrational frequency was 500 - the level of love. The village was occupied until about 100AD when it was abandoned, possibly due to rising water levels. There are records of the area being settled again in the 7th century.

Today, the overall frequency of Glastonbury Tor is 310, the level of willingness. As with most sacred sites, the frequency has fallen over time due to human influence. There was some particularly grizzly history during the Reformation at Glastonbury Abbey.

You can still experience an amazing feeling when you visit this site! The magical myths live on because they spark a good feeling within. Perhaps you will feel the higher vibrations of simpler times if you had a past life there.
