Normally, time in these clocks is measured by comparing the frequency of an atom with a laser. The accuracy of this process is limited by the SQL. But by entangling two atoms in separate clocks, the Oxford team reduced measurement uncertainty by almost half. This level of precision, known as the Heisenberg limit, doubles what was possible with traditional methods.

Building the Quantum Network

The researchers used two strontium ions, placed about 2 meters apart, and entangled them using a laser. This setup allowed them to compare frequencies between the ions with incredible accuracy. One of the coolest aspects of this system is that it can cancel out a type of interference called "laser phase noise," which usually makes it hard to get clear measurements. With the entangled system, this noise was eliminated, leading to much more stable and accurate results.
